About

Saykan
Combat

Saykan Combat teaches Filipino Martial Arts through two core disciplines developed by Grandmaster Modesto Llanera. Our classes provide a structured but approachable environment where adults can develop practical martial arts skills while improving coordination, awareness and fitness.

Saykan Arnis

Filipino weapons training — single stick, double stick, staff and bladed systems.

Saykan Mano Mano

Empty-hand combat drawing from the weapons training principles of the system.

Grandmaster Llanera now resides in Ireland and regularly visits clubs to teach the Saykan system directly.

The Art

What Is Filipino
Martial Arts

Origin

Arnis — also known as Escrima or Kali — is the national martial art of the Philippines, with centuries of history as a living combat system refined through real conflict and warfare.

Method

Training begins with the stick. The emphasis on timing, movement and weapon awareness means skills developed with the rattan transfer naturally to empty-hand and self-defence situations.

Accessibility

Unlike many martial arts, FMA begins with weapons training rather than building up to it. This accelerates the development of coordination, distance awareness and controlled power from the very first session.

The art teaches you to see before you move — and to move before your opponent has finished thinking.
